TV or not TV - That is the question

We went about a year without TV in our home. Then, when we moved to Dallas, I had TV installed for the Super Bowl. Well, it is the middle of March and we still have it on. Now we watch American Idol, 24, National Geographic, The Amazing Race, The Apprentice, Grease, You're the One That I Want, and HGTV. Of course, March Madness is upon us and the NBA Playoffs are right around the corner. I would be crazy to turn it off now, right? Well, I can get 24 on DVD when it comes out, and I don't care if I miss the other shows. But, the sports! Now that is real drama - true reality TV.

But, I will say that when we had the TV off, we seemed to have a different feeling in the home. I am not saying that it was necessarily a better feeling - just different. And, I think we like the feeling in the home with the TV off - it seems we stimulate our minds with more invigorating activities. So, maybe it is a better feeling.

What do you think?

Unfortunately, I have a job that I actually have to work at...Also, I hope you didn't send Dionne an email about this blog site. She's going to want to turn off our TV now. haha. We definitely need TV in the home...What if the Russians attack. You wouldn't hear about it unless you watch the O'Reilly Factor. Peace and Love.

Well, Lexi says no TV. She came up to me this afternoon and said, "Mommy, I'm watching too much TV. I think the TV will break b/c I'm watching it too much." I'm not kidding-it was quite funny. I packed all the toys the other day so I admit she has been watching a little too much. Of course, I would have to agree w/ her.

NO TV.
I only say this b/c I'm so sick of Law & Order (every kind), CSI (every city), Fox News, and especially Spike TV...Ultimate Fighting!
I am perfectly content with TV as long as we're watching American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, and my new favorite... Color Splash (HGTV).

I agree, Ben, our home was diferent without tv. I miss it. We definitly got more creative with our time. Not to mention you started to get pretty good at playing the guitar.

so in conclusion Steve is the only guy who agrees with NO TV (well atleast for the 3 yrs of law school i guess). He doesnt really have time to watch it right now and im assuming he wont have anytime in law school especially with our great 40 minute commute. So steve is the best..j/k...everything in moderation..aristotle's golden mean theory! the problem is it gets out of hand it seems.

I love being able to say my opinion all day! this is great.

Steve and I are setting this up tonight. you'll get an email when we are done telling you how to log on. Also, once you are a member, you can invite other ppl. So Wendy wanted to invite Heidi she could. So it can be more than just the children of Kevin and Colette. For example, we have our grandparents on ours so they can see the pics and what's going on. Anyways, Steve and I will do it when he gets home from work. As you can see I'm attached to my computer..hence the 10 comments in 1 hour!

Well I can't say we have ever tried no TV, Chris would probably hate it, mainly b/c of sports. This is my peace time I put the kids to bed, lounge on the couch for about an hour or two and veg. It is the only time I get to myself, I love it. So I would have to say TV stays on at the Cook's for now:) Love ya

We plan on having no TV when we move to Houston because we won't have that much money. We'll see how it goes. I do like watching sports or Fox News and shows like King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond. If all you do is watch TV, then it should probably go so you can develop better habits. This is just my opinion. PEACE!

Well, I live in the middle of nowhere, in 10 feet of snow, and TV is my only connection to civilization....need I say more?

By the way, check out the Jensen family website and add pictures. I'll try to get on and add stuff this afternoon.

OK, OK...This "no TV" stuff has got to stop! Steve, have your nuts dropped yet, and has Marissa completely turned you into a puppet? Here's the facts:
1) Without TV we wouldn't have the BYU channel, HGTV, and TLC.
2) TV was invented by a mormon from Idaho who was inspired of God.
3) Refer back to facts 1 & 2.
Any questions?

One of the first initiatives implemented by Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany was to burn all books and cut off the masses from all forms of unregulated communication. I am positive had TV been available at that time, Hitler would've had all of them destroyed along with everyone's guns, books and radios. This being said, all of you opposed to TV's are nothing more than a bunch of NAZI sympathizers!!

I hope all you younguns' can appreciate Dad's historical view and remember that with age comes great wisdom. After all, the soldiers in Iraq are fighting for my right to watch "America's Next Supermodel" and I for one, do not intend to let their sacrifice go for naught. In the words of the late, great Charlton Heston, "They will have to tear my TV (or maybe it was GUNS) from my cold dead hands" or something like that.

Please note that all of those defending the TV watching are the fattest! I'd rather be a Nazi sympathizer than be fat or live in Star Valley...

Ouch!!!

I guess this is where will have to agree to disagree. Steve would rather be a NAZI bastard with an hour and a half commute each way, and everyday in thick, dirty air. I would rather be a plump but happy TV type of person with a short commute in clean crisp air, with the best of all outdoors right outside my front porch. Love Dada

This whole TV or NO TV thing is opening up a whole new can of worms. From all of us SV dwellers, to all of you city folk.....TAKE IT UP THE REAR (and get me the $#!@ outta here! If I promise to turn off the TV, can I live with any of you?

Anonymous said...

Seriously, can I live with any of you?

Marissa said...

If we do the house in the suburbs then you can come live with us..but if we do the apt in the city then you can still come live wiht us but it might be a tight squeeze. In any event you can live with us or visit as frequent as possible. We are going to be down there and everyone is probably going to forget we even exist except for our few posts on this website that remind the outside world every now adn then that we are alive.

My friend e-mailed this to me that I thought was so true:
"Families unite when they do meaningful things together. Children should work together under the leadership of parents. Common employment, even on a part-time basis, is valuable. So is a family garden. Common projects to help others are also desirable. Families may establish a perpetual missionary fund. They can research and write family histories and
share them with others. They can organize family reunions. They can educate family members in the basic skills of living, including managing finances, maintaining property, and broadening their general education. The learning of languages is a useful preparation for missionary service and modern life. The teachers of these subjects can be parents or grandparents or other members of the extended family. "Some may say, 'But we have no time for that.' As for time to do what is truly worthwhile, I suggest that many parents will find that they can turn their family on if they will turn their television off. . . .
"President David O. McKay taught:
" 'The home is the first and most effective place for children to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self-control; the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home.' (Family Home Evening Manual 1968-69, p.
>iii.)"

Ya'll are hiliarious. I am glad Ben told me about his blog site, what great entertainment for a stay at home mom. Okay, what happened to moderation in all things. What would I do without the Wiggles and Seasame Street? The only reason I am able to make a comment on this blog thing, is because Hailey is glued to the TV right now. I have to say that I love TV, but too much makes me lazy. So yeah, moderation is the key.
